My triangles are finally untangling...

...a little too much though.

I just did NOT get them when I started. They really are pretty odd when you think about them. The motions of adjusting and locking in and of themselves feel quite normal now...which is great, because I get to move on to other issues with them. These, I believe, come from my greatest asset in triangling: my long legs.

My 36" inseam gives me lots of leeway in getting my legs in position. That leeway's been coming back to bite me though. Since I'm able to get my ankles crossed from longer distances, I'm prone to get myself into triangle starting position without shooting my hips up, something that wouldn't even be an option for someone with shorter limbs. I'm noticing that this is giving people plenty of room to defend in all sorts of ways...arms in, knees, all kinds of stuff. I'm even noticing this in my triangles from mount.

I'm finding that I need to either learn to adjust after my ankles are crossed and the arm is isolated (seems like a bad idea), do it right, and shoot my hips properly, or start working on going straight for the lock, which isn't easy, but I can pull it off on all but the biggest of guys.

  1. I'm jealous! 27 in inseam here! I understand what you mean about too much room. I have the opposite problem. My legs are soo short that I have a heck of a time setting up a triangle. However, once I do get it, it's tight, real tight. *shakes head in disbelief* You've got a 36 in inseam!

  2. Yeah! It's like you're either going to have problems getting a triangle started, or finished.

Yeah...I have really weird proportions. I'm 6' tall but can wear petite tops...CRAZY short midsection, but it's made up in my legs, so they'd suit somebody 3-4" taller. I always say I'm proportioned like an anime character.

  3. I JUST realized who you were on jiu jitsu forums! LOL! I can't believe it's taken me so long to put together these pieces!

Linking your blog to my blogroll now. I KNEW I was forgetting some!

  5. LOL! I am torn between wanting to give you advice, and withholding advice. On one hand I always want my BJJ sisters to excel, on the other hand, I am thinking, do I really want to ever meet this woman's deadly triangle in competition?

But seriously! Use the foot that is in your opponent's hip to really push your hips up and off the ground, then, when your other leg wraps around the neck, reach up and grab your ankle before you lock your push off leg around your ankle.

Sounds like this could turn out to be a signature move for you, which is so so so uber cool! You could be known as the Triangler or something.
