...which sucks because I'm just getting decent at it. I rolled with one of my favorite blues yesterday, all full of confidence in my ability to bump up heavy people. All that happened was a lot of me grunting...and he's only 195 or so...which means I can't even handle my own body weight. Sads.
It was a reminder that I need to start work on my review of the Bigger, Stronger DVD series by Stephan Kesting and Emily Kwok. I've been trying to digest it slowly because for me, as a bigger player, it really does turn everything I've known upside down. I feel like I need to start from scratch on even the most basic techniques. I use SO much power and strength in what I do.

I think the grunting was my last hurrah in trying to indiscriminately play big-people-jiujitsu. I've mentioned that I want to learn the little person's game and I'm going to start treating that seriously and not just trying "little tricks" as I go. I'm going to decide which way I'm going to go before I even start sparring. I also learned from that one roll, that I need MUCH better endurance. I was likely a tad out of sorts from not training for two weeks, but I fatigued quickly, and I think most of that was from trying to move more, like littler people do. I also learned that I don't look for space to move myself into or out of (like coming to the back instead of trying the bump). I instead look for things to force and move.
I don't know if I'll end up with a completely bi-polar game, or eventually develop a clean, flexible one, but either way, it's time to start fleshing out some spots.

I feel like I'm in the same boat right now. I've developed a certain style of rolling that works for my body type, height and weight and age. But I'm finding it limiting and I need to open my mind to different possibilities and quit thinking that I can't roll like a smaller person. Let me know what you think about the DVD series. Seriously contemplating buying it for myself for Christmas!
I love it. It's changed how I see jiu jitsu. The first time I tried it, I did it with one of the smaller kids and "pretended" he was bigger...just to get a feel for some of the concepts.
