"Safety Cat" Self Defense Keychain

A friend sent me this today. It's a key chain that can be worn around the knuckles for use in a self defense situation. I find the reviews a bit funny, since none cite use in an actual defense situation, but at $5, I'm considering checking one out. Even in a close situation, I can see it being useful.

It's cute (I'm a cat person), but you're better off with a good knife.

I can see where this might appeal to women who would recoil in horror at the idea of carrying a defensive knife... but if the chips are down, I can't imagine this tool doing much besides p!ssing your attacker off. Its shape even precludes you from being able to get a good eyeball stab.

If you're in dire enough straits to be stabbing somebody, do it RIGHT... with a Spyderco Delica. (and no, they didn't pay me to say that....)

I was kind of wondering about the "piss off" factor". It seems like it doesn't do enough damage to slow someone down, but definitely enough to escalate a situation.

One of the reviewers did mention the idea of women who are put off by the idea of carrying a knife. Still not sure this is a good substitute.

Interesting. It might deter a thief trying for a quick purse snatch. As for someone who wants to hurt you-- I don't know-- seems a pointy umbrella might be more effective.

Ditto at the umbrella.

I agree, this weapon isn't "absolute" enough. It seems like it would escalate the potential violence. It's cute though. I would get it just because.

that keychain connecting to an eye = game over.
